Karmelo Bermejo (b.1979, Malaga) seeks to reveal the value systems, whether religious, commercial or of prestige, that influence the various structures sustaining the world.
In his recent series Fiscal Oil Paints (pictured), the buyer is challenged not to declare the acquisition of the piece and the gallery not to declare its sale. The optical illusion of colour in the paintings is configured using glazes to obtain a solid colour identical to the standard appearance of manufactured colour. The inscription 'Undeclared Income' in the top layer of paint is legible only from certain points of view and in certain lighting conditions; otherwise the text remains hidden. The works hold the 'secret noise' of the buying-and-selling performativity that will be executed with them.
